Pastor Search Team
Stay tuned to this page in the coming days, weeks and months for updates about the search for the next Lead Pastor of BridgePoint Church!
June 30th, 2020
Dear BridgePoint Family,
We write with joy to inform you that Robert McTurnal has been officially named our new Lead Pastor!
It’s been a long road that led us here, and so it’s important to us that you know all of the steps taken, so that you can have confidence that this process was undertaken prayerfully, carefully, and with consideration of our church governing documents.
Below, we have listed the portions of our bylaws regarding the appointment of a new pastor, including our comments and information on the steps taken to satisfy each of these requirements:
In ARTICLE 4 – PASTORAL STAFF, Section 3 of our church Bylaws, it states:
“In the event of a vacancy in the position of Lead Pastor, for whatever reason, the Elder Team shall constitute or appoint individuals to a Pastor Search Team.”
The Pastoral Search Team was formed in December of 2019, at the behest and approval of the Elders, and consisted of:
- Heidi Bristow
- Bobbie Brown
- Dan Knott
- Joyce Kubeczka
- Rob Letchworth
- Amy McTurnal
- Kevin Price
The Pastor Search Team shall elect a chairman and secretary from their number, and shall proceed with as little delay as possible.
Kevin Price was selected as Pastor Search Team Chairman.
Bobbie Brown was selected as Pastor Search Team Secretary.
Candidates for Lead Pastor shall have a Christian character and qualifications that conform to these Bylaws.
For almost six months, the Pastor Search Team researched 120 candidates, all having upstanding character and qualifications.
The recommendation of the Pastor Search Team for a specific candidate shall be submitted to the Elder Team for a vote at a duly called meeting.
This meeting took place on Saturday, June 19th, wherein the PST presented Robert McTurnal to the Elders as their final (and unanimous) candidate.
The candidate shall lead worship service at least one Sunday before the Elder Team meeting to vote.
Pastor McTurnal preached for us this past Sunday, June 28th.
The Pastor Search Team’s recommendation shall be considered a nomination and only one name shall be recommended at a time. A unanimous affirmative vote of the Elder Team members present and voting shall constitute a call.
Additionally, though it was not a requirement by the bylaws, the Elders decided to allow congregation members to submit any concerns they had via email for the Elders to consider before their final vote.
Also, the Elders decided to have an online Q&A session, allowing congregants to ask direct questions to the candidate, to provide further clarity and comfort to the congregation.
Today (Tuesday, June 29th, 2020), the Elders met to have a final vote to affirm Pastor Robert McTurnal.
After a unanimous vote was recorded, the Elders notified the Pastor Search Team so that they could, then, notify Pastor Robert McTurnal he’d been approved as the new Lead Pastor for BridgePoint Church.
The Pastor Search Team shall notify the candidate of the voting results as soon as possible.
The Pastor Search Team notified Pastor Robert McTurnal of the decision today (Tuesday, June 30th, 2020).
Upon appointment, a Lead Pastor shall serve for an indefinite term or until the sooner of his death, resignation or removal.”
We are thankful for God’s guidance, for the commitment and hard work of everyone on the Pastor Search Team, and for your support of the church’s leadership through this process.
We are excited about the future and getting to the important work of growing God’s Kingdom!
The BridgePoint Church Elders
June 23rd, 2020
Seven months ago, we embarked on what seemed to be a difficult journey, but soon found out nothing is difficult when you put your trust and faith in the Lord to guide you. John 16:13 says “The Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own, he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
Many scriptures like this as well as our intense study of Timothy and Titus led us and prepared us weekly for this journey, seeking the new Shepherd for BridgePoint Church. Ultimately, we knew the decision was already made, God had already selected our new Shepherd it was just our task to follow the tedious process and listen for His discernment.
121 resumes were narrowed down one by one until we reached the final few that stood out amongst the rest. God surely had his hand in this process because some applicants eliminated themselves.
It soon became clear as to who was the ONE God wanted to send to BridgePoint, this man of God consistently rose to the top in all categories. We prayed intensely through this process as we evaluated his resume, sermons, personality assessment, marriage assessment, in person interviews and reached out to 12 professional and personal references. Consistently hearing from all his references, the same responses over and over, even more so confirmed what God had already shown us. The choice was made….it was straight from GOD and unanimous among the Pastor Search Team and the Elders. We look forward to seeing what God has in store for BridgePoint as our new Pastor begins his journey with us.
So, what is he like? Our New Pastor candidate and his family come to us from Tennessee, he is 40 years old. He has a Doctor of Education, Masters in Divinity and a Masters in Religion all from Liberty University. With over 15 years in ministerial experience, his current position is Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Youth. His love for God and His Word is evident in all that he says and does. He is extremely active with outreach in the community serving as a chaplain for several organizations and as a character coach for boys’ sports teams.
Ministry strengths include a strong desire for discipleship not just leading people to salvation and leaving them there but going beyond that with them so they too can disciple others. He strongly believes that ministry must be taken outside of the walls of the church to the community around us. Building strong relationships with people and surrounding himself with wise counsel is crucial to his ministry. Work with the church staff must be team-oriented, with team leadership and personal accountability. And of course, preaching the Word in a relatable way to the congregation. Everyone is on a different spiritual level and you must be able to reach each person where they are.
Family is extremely important to him and he consistently makes time for them in his busy schedule. His wife is very supportive and active in his ministry as well as being a teacher. Their family places a strong emphasis on their faith and on obedience to God’s leading. They are a very strong couple with a strong commitment to each other and what God has called them to do.
They are very excited about this opportunity that God has placed before them and are looking forward to being here this weekend to share the Word and meet our church family. In the meantime, please continue to be in prayer over this transitional process for him, his family and BridgePoint.
